Low-carbon A710 steel plate is an age hardening, alloy steel used where weight reduction, ease of fabrication and reduced welding costs are important. A710 is used in the manufacturing of jack-up rigs, construction equipment, pressure vessels, truck frames, piping components and shipbuilding.

This specification covers precipitation-strengthened low carbon nickel copper-chromium-molybdenum-columbium alloy structural steel plates. Precipitation strengthening and precipitation heat treatment shall be performed on the material to enhance and alter the required structural and mechanical properties. Heat analysis shall be used to determine the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium, and titanium. Yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation shall be evaluated using tension test and the required toughness shall be evaluated using notch toughness test.

The mechanical properties introduced to the steel through this processing route are virtually equivalent to those obtained by heat treating conventionally rolled or forged steel. 690QL1 is a high strength fine grained quenched and tempered structural steel. It has a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa. Known as Dillimax 690E  it is extra tough with minimum impact values down to -60 oC. • The RQT range can be machined and drilled using high-speed steel or cemented carbide tools.  The approximate hardness of the RQT range can be obtained from the value of the ultimate tensile strength and falls within the range 240-280 BHN.

Welding:

Flame Cutting:

• RQT steels can be cut satisfactorily using conventional oxy-fuel gas practices, in many cases without the need for preheat, as long as cutting procedures take into account plate thicknesses and carbon equivalent values. Water jet, where no heat is generated, or plasma cutting can also be used. Care should be taken when cutting under water as the quenching effect could result in a high hardness edge forming.  With all thermal cutting processes care should be taken that cut edges are free from sharp notches.

Cold Bending:

• Quenched & Tempered steels can be readily cold formed however the power required will be higher (70%) than that for mild steel of the same thickness.  It is recommended that the largest possible bending radius should be used, and generally the inside radius should not be less that 3 times the plate thickness.
