Used in particular applications within 450-850 degrees centigrade, 321 combines high strength with resistance to scaling and phase stability, Some typical areas of application are, furnace components, superheater and afterburner parts, compensator and expansion bellows.

These grades are used because they are not sensitive to intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850°C. Grade 321 is the grade of choice for applications in the temperature range of up to about 900°C, combining high strength, resistance to scaling and phase stability with resistance to subsequent aqueous corrosion.

Grade 321H is a modification of 321 with a higher carbon content, to provide improved high temperature strength.

A limitation with 321 is that titanium does not transfer well across a high temperature arc, so is not recommended as a welding consumable.

Triton Alloys Inc is the Largest Stockist and Exporter of Abrasion Resistant Plate. Abrasion Resistant (AR) steel plate is typically made in the as-rolled condition. These types/grades of steel plate products have been developed specifically for long service life in harsh conditions. AR products are suitable for a variety of applications in areas such as mining/quarrying, conveyors, material handling and construction, Bulldozers , and earthmoving.

The steel is quenched which provides wear resistance; in order to improve hardness it may also be tempered. Lower HB’s generally provide good cold bending properties and good weldability. Weldability is not generally reduced as the hardness increases. The benefits of employing wear-resistant plate steel in applications involving impact and/or sliding contact with abrasive material are immense.

Steel plate for use in abrasive conditions is not typical because it is not governed by any ASTM code or spec. Many steel plate manufacturers produce their own brand of abrasion resistant steel and these are usually distinguished by a brand name followed by the hardness of the steel which is measured in Brinell units

Stainless steel plate is often referred to as “corrosion-resistant steel” – it does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as normal carbon steel. Alloy 303 is a non-magnetic, austenitic stainless steel that is not hardenable by heat treatment. It is the free machining modification of the basic 18% chromium / 8% nickel stainless steel. Alloy 303 was specially designed to exhibit improved machinability while maintaining good mechanical and corrosion resistant properties Due to the presence of sulfur in the steel composition, Alloy 303 is the most readily machineable austenitic stainless steel; however, the sulfur addition does lower Alloy 303’s corrosion resistance to below that of Alloy 304. Like other austenitic grades, Alloy 303 demonstrates excellent toughness, although the sulfur does reduce this a little as well.

These types of steel are some of the most regularly specified and have come to represent the embodiment of the basic stainless product. They are part of the 300 Series of steels (as defined in SAE specifications) which covers a range of austenitic chromium-nickel alloys. They are also known as 18/8 stainless due to their chemical composition which includes approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel by weight. The steels are easy to form, weld, and fabricate and their resistance to corrosion from, amongst other things, acids naturally contained in food has resulted in them being used widely in the food and drink processing industries.

Type 304 and Type 304L have very similar chemical and mechanical properties and are often included on a single material test certificate when the actual properties of a stainless steel plate meet the criteria of both types. This is a very common occurrence. Type 304L is a variation of Type 304 and has a lower carbon content which improves weldability and lowers the risk of reduced corrosion resistance around the weld. Type 304L also has a slightly lower yield and tensile strength than Type 304.

Unlike 304L, Type 304H has a higher carbon content making the steel more suitable for use in applications where elevated temperatures are present. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy and the greater carbon content delivers an increased tensile and yield strength.

The material is recommended for use in ASME pressure vessels in working service above 525 °C due to the grade’s heat resistant properties.304H alloy is commonly found in the oil refining, gas and chemical industry and is used in industrial boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pipelines and condensers. Alloy 309 (UNS S30900) is an austenitic stainless steel developed for use in high temperature corrosion resistance applications. The alloy resists oxidation up to 1900°F (1038°C) under non-cyclic conditions. Frequent thermal cycling reduces oxidation resistance to approximately 1850°F (1010°C).

Because of its high chromium and low nickel content, Alloy 309 can be utilized in sulfur containing atmospheres up to 1832°F (1000°C). The alloy is not recommended for use in highly carburizing atmospheres since it exhibits only moderate resistance to carbon absorption. Alloy 309 can be utilized in slightly oxidizing, nitriding, cementing and thermal cycling applications, albeit, the maximum service temperature must be reduced.

Stainless steel grade 310H has carbon content and is a preferred choice for high temperature applications. This steel has good resistance to oxidation at temperatures of up to 1040°C (1904°F) in intermittent service and 1150°C (2102°F) in continuous service. It is widely used in environments where sulfur dioxide gas is present at high temperatures; however it is recommended that this steel should not be continuously used at 425-860°C (797-1580°F) range due to carbide precipitation.

Properties are similar to those of Type 304 except that this alloy is somewhat stronger at elevated temperatures. Corrosion resistance is improved, particularly against sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic, formic and tartaric acids; acid sulfates and alkaline chlorides.

Alloy 316/316L is molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The higher nickel and molybdenum content in this grade allows it to demonstrate better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304 , especially with regard to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. In addition, Alloy 316/ 316L provides excellent elevated temperature tensile, creep and stress-rupture strengths, as well as outstanding formability and weldability. 316L is the lower carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitization; therefore, it is very frequently used in heavy gauge welded components.

Alloy 321H (UNS S 32109) stainless steel plate is the higher carbon (0.04 – 0.10) version of the alloy. It was developed for enhanced creep resistance and for higher strength at temperatures above 1000oF (537°C). In most instances, the carbon content of the plate enables dual certification.Alloy 321 stainless steel plate cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working. 321H stainless steel is a widely used stainless steel, where parts are heated within carbide-precipitation temperature range (800°F-1500°F) and exposed to corrosive atmosphere. SS 321 is similar to SS 304, but with higher nickel content and stabilized with titanium. Titanium preferentially reacts with carbon in the steel and prevents precipitation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, thus preserving corrosion-resistant properties by preventing depletion of chromium near the grain boundaries during exposure within critical temperature range. This grade responds well to hardening by cold working. It has good welding characteristics; and post-weld annealing is not normally required to restore its excellent performance in a wide range of corrosive conditions.

Alloy 330 is an austenitic, nickel-chromium-iron-silicon alloy that has outstanding resistance to oxidation and carburization up to 2200°F with high strength. The excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization is provided by the high nickel and chromium content of the alloy, further enhanced by its silicon content. Alloy 330’s ultra high nickel content of 34 to 37% also provides high resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and embrittlement from the precipitation of sigma phase in most furnace atmospheres. Alloy 330 also has a low coefficient of expansion, excellent ductility, and high strength.

330 steel is an austenitic heat and corrosion resisting alloy that offers a combination of strength and resistance to carburization, oxidation and thermal shock. This alloy was designed for applications in high temperature industrial environments where good resistance to the combined effects of carburization and thermal cycling are required, such as the heat treat industry. Carburization and oxidation resistance to about 2100°F are enhanced by the silicon content of the alloy. 330 stainless remains fully austenitic at all temperatures and is not subject to embrittlement from sigma formation. It has a solid solution composition and is not hardenable by heat treatment. The alloy’s strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures make it a useful material for industrial heating furnaces. 1.

347 stainless steel is variant of the basic austenitic 18/8 Grade 304 with added Columbium – the introduction of Columbium stabilizes the steel and eliminates carbide precipitation which subsequently causes intergranular corrosion. The steel has excellent forming and welding qualities and excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.

Alloy 347 is a stabilized, austenitic, chromium steel containing columbium which allows for the elimination of carbide precipitation, and, consequently, intergranualr corrosion. Alloy 347 is stabilized by the additions of chromium and tantalum and offers higher creep and stress rupture properties than alloy 304 and 304L which may also be used for exposures where sensitization and intergranualr corrosion are of concern. The addition of columbium also allows Alloy 347 to have excellent corrosion resistance, even superior to that of alloy 321.  347H is the higher carbon composition form of Alloy 347 and demonstrates improved high temperature and creep properties.

Duplex 2507 is a super duplex stainless steel designed for applications which demand exceptional strength and corrosion resistance. Alloy 2507 has 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, and 7% nickel. This high molybdenum, chromium and nitrogen content results in excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion attack and the duplex structure provides 2507 with exceptional resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Usage of Duplex 2507 should be limited to applications below 600° F (316° C). Extended elevated temperature exposure can reduce both the toughness and corrosion resistance of alloy 2507.Duplex 2507 possesses excellent mechanical properties. Often a light gauge of 2507 material can be used to achieve the same design strength of a thicker nickel alloy. 310S (UNS S31008) is the low carbon version of the alloy. It is utilized for ease of fabrication. 310H (UNS S31009) is a high carbon modification developed for enhanced creep resistance. In most instances the grain size and carbon content of the plate can meet both the 310S and 310H requirements.

Type 310S Stainless Steel is identical to Type 310 except for a lower carbon content that minimizes carbide precipitation and improves weldability. They are essentially nonmagnetic as annealed and become lightly magnetic when cold worked.Stainless steel 310S is an austenitic heat resistant alloy with excellent resistance to oxidation under mildly cyclic conditions through 2000ºF. In addition, Alloy 316/ 316L provides excellent elevated temperature tensile, creep and stress-rupture strengths, as well as outstanding formability and weldability. 316L is the lower carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitization; therefore, it is very frequently used in heavy gauge welded components.

Type 316 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium nickel stainless steel containing molybdenum. This addition increases general corrosion resistance, improves resistance to pitting from chloride ion solutions, and provides increased strength at elevated temperatures. Properties are similar to those of Type 304 except that this alloy is somewhat stronger at elevated temperatures.

Alloy 317L (UNS S31703) is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with greatly increased resistance to chemical attack as compared to the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as Alloy 304. In addition, Alloy 317L offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than conventional stainless steels. It is a low carbon or “L” grade which provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes.

The low carbon content of Alloy 317L enables it to be welded without intergranular corrosion resulting from chromium carbide precipitation enabling it to be used in the as-welded condition. With the addition of nitrogen as a strengthening agent, the alloy can be dual certified as Alloy 317 (UNS S31700)..

2205 (UNS S32760)
2205 is a duplex stainless steel with a micro structure of nearly equal proportions of austenite and ferrite, when properly heat treated. This micro structure ensures that 2205 is much more resistant to stress corrosion cracking than Stainless Steel 304 or 316L. Its higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content gives the product significantly improved pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance in the presence of chlorides.

Stainless Steel 2205 also has better general corrosion resistance than 316L in most environments. In addition, 2205 has a 0.2% proof stress of approximately double that of conventional austenitic stainless steels. Stainless Steel 2205 is highly suitable for service in environments containing chlorides and hydrogen sulfide, such as marine applications and the oil and gas extraction and processing industries.

904L is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. The grade is intended for use under severe corrosive conditions. It has been application proved over many years and was originally developed to resist corrosion in dilute sulfuric acid. It is standardized and approved for pressure vessel use in several countries. Structurally, 904L is fully austenitic and is less sensitive to precipitation ferrite and sigma phases than conventional austenitic grades with high molybdenum content. Characteristically, due to the combination of relatively high contents of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper 904L has good resistance to general corrosion, particularly in sulfuric and phosphoric conditions.

904L is widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, oil and gas industries. Typical applications include tanks, valves, heat exchangers, flanges and manifolds. The addition of copper to the composition of 904L aids its suitability for components such as tanks and other products used in handling sulphuric and phosphoric acid.
904L can be welded using common fusion and resistance methods. A more highly alloyed filler is recommended to give the optimum corrosion properties in the weld. We recommend you contact your welding consumables supplier who should provide you full assistance and information on welding 904L stainless steel.

A high carbon version, Alloy 347H (UNS S34709), can also be ordered in the same thickness range.Alloy 347 (S34700) is a stabilized stainless steel which offers as its main advantage an excellent resistance to inter granular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 to 1500°F (427 to 816°C). Alloy 347 is stabilized by the addition of columbium and tantalum.

Alloy 347 stainless steel is also advantageous for high temperature service because of its good mechanical properties. Alloy 347 stainless steel offers higher creep and stress rupture properties than Alloy 304 and, particularly, Alloy 304L, which might also be considered for exposures where sensitization and inter granular corrosion are concerns.
