Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark COR-TEN steel and sometimes written without the hyphen as “Corten steel”, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years.
United States Steel Corporation (USS) holds the registered trademark on the name COR-TEN.[1] Although USS sold its discrete plate business to International Steel Group (now Arcelor-Mittal) in 2003,[2] it still sells COR-TEN branded material in strip-mill plate and sheet forms.
The original COR-TEN received the standard designation A 242 (“COR-TEN A”) from the ASTM International standards group. Newer ASTM grades are A 588 (“COR-TEN B”) and A 606 for thin sheet. All alloys are in common production and use.
Properties:
“Weathering” means that due to their chemical compositions, these steels exhibit increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to other steels. This is because the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather.
The corrosion-retarding effect of the protective layer is produced by the particular distribution and concentration of alloying elements in it. The layer protecting the surface develops and regenerates continuously when subjected to the influence of the weather. In other words, the steel is allowed to rust in order to form the ‘protective’ coating. The benefits of such a steel are immediately obvious – a self–protecting steel is economic, long lasting and easily recyclable.

A242 Type1 steel grade is a hot rolled products of structural steels in technical delivery conditions with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. The main alloying elements are chromium nickel and copper with added phosphorous which gives it excellent self protecting qualities. As the steel reacts with elements in the atmosphere, the material forms a layer of rust over time which in essence protects the steel from corrosion.
A242 Type1 steel is the Equivalent grades as S355J2WP (1.8946) steel in EN 10025 – 5 : 2004 standard and FE510D1K1 steel in UNI standard and also E36WA4 steel in NFA 35-502 standard.
A242 Type1 Steel Delivery state Hot Rolled, Cold Rolled, Normalized, Quenched, Tempering, Thermal Mechanical Control Process (TMCP), Electroslag Remelting Technical, HIC test.
A588 Grade A steel plate is for high strength low alloy structural steel with 345Mpa minimum yield point to 100mm thickness.
When propertly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 Grade A is suitable for many applications in the bare condition. A588 Grade A could be produced in 200mm in our Triton mill.Triton Alloys Inc is specialized in supplying ASTM A588 steel plate in A588 Grade A. For more information of A588 Grade

Mechanical Properties Of a588 grade a Steel Plate:
SA588 Grade B steel plate is for high strength low alloy structural steel with 345Mpa minimum yield point to 100mm thickness. When propertly exposed to the atmosphere, SA588 Grade B is suitable for many applications in the bare condition.
SA588GrB steel plates with the thickness form 8mm~200mm are used as high weathering bridge structural steel,SA588 Grade B steel contains Cu, P, Cr, Ni and other elements, these elements give the steel SA588 Grade B a high resistance to the corrosion of atmosphere. SA588 Grade B steel plates and sheets are applied mostly on weathering construction components and bridge structural parts.

Mechanical Properties Of sa588 grade b Steel Plate:
A588 steel plate is a corrosion-resistant steel high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) structural steel plate that is excellent for welding, riveting or bolting in construction applications, primarily welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 is suitable for many applications in the bare or unpainted condition.
A588 is a high-strength low-alloy steel plate used in structural applications such as bridges and buildings. Its advantage over A572 50 is its "weathering" ability, which provides atmospheric corrosion resistance and ultimately longer life in applications where exposure to elements will be a factor. We generally stock this material as A588 Gr A & B in plate and 606 in sheet.
A588 steel plate is used for products that are exposed to the elements. These include:
Bridge plates
Gusset plates
Freight cars
Transmission and telecommunications towers
Housing and enclosures
