HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) is the result of a corrosive reaction between carbon steel and hydrogen sulphide. Wet hydrogen sulphide (H2S) cracking in steel has been a problem in petroleum refining and upstream oil and gas processing since the 1950s. Working conditions where wet H2S prevails are often described as sour service conditions and the term sour gas can be also be used in this context. As more fields rich in H2S are exploited, and this is increasingly the case, the problem is increasingly significant for equipment fabricated in potentially sensitive carbon-manganese (C-Mn) steels.

Steel in contact with water containing H2S will corrode producing hydrogen at its surface. H2S not only inhibits the formation of hydrogen gas, so reducing the opportunity for it to escape, but promotes its absorption in to the steel. At typical working temperatures below 200 degrees Celsius hydrogen atoms can become trapped causing embrittlement and ultimately cracking.

The use of steel pressure vessels in industries such as oil and gas processing requires a robust steel which is resilient to the long term corrosive effects of hydrogen sulphide in sour service applications. In order to provide better H2S resistance the properties of C-Mn steels have been progressively developed to improve chemistry, cleanliness, homogeneity, and microstructure.

Triton Alloys  provides a complete range of plate tested for its resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) in wet H2S (sour service) environments. The plate is manufactured by Industeel (part of the Arcelor Mittal Group) & by ISD HUTA, Poland and is guaranteed by them to have the following minimum properties:
  • Crack Length Ratio (CLR) less than 5 %
  • Crack Thickness Ratio (CTR) less than 1.5%
  • Crack Sensitivity Ratio (CSR) less than 0.5%

The plate is tested to NACE TM 0284-03 Solution A and certified to EN 10204 3.2 (Lloyds). It is compatible with many of the world’s most stringent proprietary specifications including Petrobras N1706, Saudi Aramco 01-SAMSS-016, EEMUA 179, Axens IN-43, Shell MESC 74/125, and Shell DEP 31.22.10.32.We are able to offer plates to ASME / ASTM SA / A 516 Grades 60/65/70.

Plates are supplied from stock from our warehousing facilities in Stoke-on-Trent (U.K.), Antwerp (Belgium), and Dubai (U.A.E.).

Chemical Analysis:
  • Max Ceq 0.41% <= 50mm, 0.43% > 50mm
  • Max S  0.001%, P  0.008%, Nb  0.015%, V  0.005%, O  0.002%

Mechanical Properties:
  • Mechanical and HIC tests after simulated PWHT at 610°C (2 min/mm).
  • Ambient tensile properties as per standard.

Charpy impact test longitudinal and transverse direction:
  • At -51°C for thickness <= 25mm (20J average /16J individual)
  • At -46°C for thickness >25mm (41J average /34J individual)
 
NDT:
  • Ultrasonic testing control as per SA 578 level C with +75mm pitch scanning and +100mm² max defect area.

General Supply Conditions:
  • Normalized 920°C. The material surface is shot blasted to SA 2.5, with low-stress die stamping at two locations: head and foot of plate.  In addition, material has identification paint markings on one end and shipping marks. Plates have continuous brand marked on the two long edges.

Additional Testing:

This specification covers carbon steel plates of low- and intermediate-tensile strengths which may be made by killed, semi-killed, capped, or rimmed steel. These plates are intended for fusion-welded pressure vessels. Plates are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The steel shall conform to the required chemical compositions. The plates, as represented by the tension test specimens, shall conform to the mechanical property requirements.

A285 steel plates are intended for fusion-welded pressure vessels. Plates are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition.Under ASME SA 285/SA 285M,Carbon steel plate SA285 Grade A,SA285 Grade B and SA285 Grade C is equal to steel grade A285 Grade C,A285 Grade B and A285 Grade A pressure vessel steel sheet.These pressure vessel steel plates A285 Gr A,A285 GrB,A285 GrC owned low and intermediate tensile strengths which may be made by killed,semi-killed,capped or rimmed steel practices according to the end users’ option.

The main differnence for these three carbon steel grades of SA285 Grade A,SA285 Grade B and SA285 Grade C is their yield strength and tensile strength. For pressure vessel steel plate SA285 Grade A,minimum yield strength shall be 165 Mpa and 24Ksi,and SA285 Grade B pressure vessel steel plate owned the minimum yield strength at 185 Mpa and 27 Ksi,then pressure vessel steel plate SA285 Grade C owned the highest yield among them,it shall be above 205 Mpa and 30 Ksi.So steel plate SA285 Grade C is the most common used in the industry.

The specification EN 10028:3 covers a range of weldable fine grain steels supplied in the normalised condition and intended for pressure purposes.EN 10028:3 P355NH is steel for pressure purposes (P) with minimum yield strength of 355 MPa (355) which has specified elevated temperature properties (NH).

P355NH is a pressure vessel steel to EN10028-3 that is used for high temperatures. It is normalised and fine grained  with excellent weldability. Like other pressure vessel steel grades we carry large quantities in stock for immediate delivery.The majority of our P355NH boiler plate is from Dillinger Hutte and thus is of exceptionally high quality and able to meet the most demanding requirements.

P355NH steel plate is typically used in boiler and pressure vessels in a variety of industrial uses. Many use cases are found in the oil and gas and petrochemical industriesA pressure vessel steel grade with good weldability and high resistance to brittle cracking, P355NH is used by the world’s fabricators for the manufacture of pressure vessel tanks for the storage of pressurised gases.

ASTM A516 Grade 60 is a boiler and pressure vessel quality steel which is ideal for moderate and lower temperature service. The material is used extensively by industrial boiler and pressure vessel fabricators who provide manufacturing support to the oil, gas and petrochemical industry. The steel has good weldability and excellent notch toughness.

At Triton we keep a healthy stock of ASTM A516 Grade 60 carbon steel plates. These plates come with mill certification in compliance with EN10204 3.1 or EN10204 3.2. and are hard stamped and fully traceable. Alternatively we can ship to you directly from the mill.

Please refer to the data tables below. Should your require a pressure grade steel with greater tensile and yield strength, please refer to ASTM A516 Grade 65 and/or ASTM A516 Grade 70.

ASTM A 516 Gr.55 Plate
A516 steel plate, also known as PVQ516 steel plate, is carbon steel with specifications for pressure vessel plates and moderate or lower temperature service. A516 steel plate is intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. Plates 1.50” and under in thickness are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The plates may be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both. Plates over 1.50” in thickness shall be normalized.

ASME SA537 Class 2 steel – a pressure vessel grade steel which is an alloy of carbon, manganese and silicon. The steel is used extensively in the fabrication and manufacture of pressurised tanks, boilers and heat exchangers.

Heat treated using the quenched and tempered method, the material has higher residual tensile and yield strength when compared to pressure vessel grades produced under the ASME SA516 standard. ASME SA537 Class 2 is used extensively by the oil, gas and petrochemical industry.

This specification covers carbon-silicon steel plates primarily for intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded boilers and other pressure vessels. Plates are available in three grades having different strength levels: Grade 60; Grade 65; and Grade 70. The steel shall be killed and made to a coarse austenitic grain size practice.

P265GH is a weldable pressure vessel and boiler steel grade used by the world’s industrial fabricators. This European standard grade  has replaced the BS1501 and DIN17155 specification. The material, which is suited for elevated temperature service, is normally  found in the  oil & gas, petrochemical and chemical industry.

The specification EN 10028:2 covers a range of non-alloy and alloy steels with specified elevated temperature properties intended for pressure purposes. EN 10028:2 P265GH is steel for pressure purposes (P) with minimum yield strength of 265 MPa (265).

The specification EN 10028:3 covers a range of weldable fine grain steels supplied in the normalised condition and intended for pressure purposes.EN 10028:3 P355NH is steel for pressure purposes (P) with minimum yield strength of 355 MPa (355) which has specified elevated temperature properties (NH).
