As a structural steel, DILLIDUR combines maximum resistance to wear with low material input and exceptionally good workability. It can be used in situations in which conventional engineering steels would be destroyed by direct contact with soil and rock – and where conventional wear-resistant steels cannot be used, due to their limited workability – making DILLIDUR the ideal material for earthmoving and mining machines. This steel is available in a rationally graduated scale of hardnesses extending to 500 HB.

Besides the classic grades of water quenched and tempered steels with degrees of hardness of around 400 or 500 HB, which achieve their wear resistance by increasing the composite hardness, Triton supplies steel grades that have a special status among wear-resistant steels. The focal point is the steel grading BRINAR 400 Cr. The wear strength of this steel is established by its optimal alloy concept. In addition to the initial hardness of the steel a fine distribution of very hard chromium and molybdenum carbides that act against wear contribute towards a long service life under extreme wear conditions.

A reason for the possible improvement in service life when using this special steel is the fact that in the case of water quenched and tempered steels the hardness is reduced towards the middle of the plate thickness as a consequence of the decreasing cooling-down speed, while in the case of the steel grading BRINAR 400 Cr the microstructure and hardness are uniform throughout the plate thickness. As a result of this, uniform wear can take place in use.
